Quintus’ rise to primus palus status, the best of the best among gladiators, is paralleled by the rise of his arch-rival, Lucius, in Imperial politics. · Book 2: Fight For Rome

Amazonia’s screams echo through the Pompeii ludus as she gives birth to her first son. But it is far from a joyous occasion, as the boy is the product of a violent rape. As the years pass, Quintus and Lindani join the ranks of the doctores, training the new fighters and hunters at the ludus. But when a young man who Quintus has spent a year training is suddenly cut down in the arena, he questions his new purpose in life. Seeing that Amazonia’s son will soon be headed for the same fate, he implores the lanista to sell the boy. Amazonia is furious that Quintus has caused the separation of her and her son. Her allegiance to Quintus turns volatile, mirroring the volcanic tremors that have begun to rock Pompeii. Both Amazonia’s fury and Vesuvio violently erupt during games at the amphitheater. The resulting chaos and devastation threaten everything Quintus has lived for over the past fifteen years.
